Petra Martic v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

The 15th-ranked Martic has never played Russia’s Gracheva before this in a competitive match.

Martic Coming off Strong Showing

The top seed at the Palermo Open, Martic displayed a strong showing in her run to the semifinal at that event. In her last-four encounter however, she came up against an inspired Anett Kontaveit showing and no amount of pressure she tried to impose proved to be enough.

While she lost in straight sets in the end, Martic did win her first three matches in the tournament and having faced different scenarios each time. She dropped just three games to Alison van Uytvanck, came back from a set down to edge out Luidmila Samsonova and needed two tie-breakers against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in which she held her nerve rather well.

Clay is Martic’s most preferred surface, to the extent she had a 15-3 win-loss record on it last season and 25-4 in 2017. Against a player ranked outside the top 100, Martic shouldn’t face too many issues.

Gracheva Failed to Qualify in Palermo

Russia’s Gracheva had tried to make it through to the main draw in Palermo and while she had Matilde Paoletti in straight sets in her first round match, she lost to Martina Trevisan in the second. Gracheva went down 6-2, 6-0, which was bit of a shock given her opponent is ranked about 50 places behind her.

The Russian has been playing exhibition competitions during the pandemic break too, featuring in the European Pro Tennis Series and participating in a tournament in Basel mid-July. However, those tournaments were on hard court which might have made the adjustment to clay a tad difficult.

Here’s the interesting bit though. Gracheva is rather fond of clay, having won all her seven lower-tiered tournaments on that surface over the past three seasons. Her clay court win-loss record at that level last year was 46-10 and it now is a matter of taking that step up to the bigger leagues.

Petra Martic v Varvara Gracheva Prediction & Tip

While Martic is 1/3 (bet365) to win this match, expecting Gracheva to put up some sort of a fight here. However, Martic to still win in straight sets for us, which is 4/5 odds.

Tip: Martic to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
