Elise Mertens v Eugenie Bouchard Head to Head

Three previous matches in the past between these two players have led to three wins for Mertens against Bouchard. Their last two came in 2018, at Montreal and Hopman Cup and much like what had happened in their first outing in 2016 on grass in Rosmalen, Mertens triumphed in straight sets.

Mertens Getting Back into the Groove

Things didn’t start too well for Mertens when she played in Palermo last week, where she didn’t just lose but also did that in straight sets to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Resuming against Jasmine Paolini in her opener here in Prague, Mertens dropped a set before edging past her opponent to make it to the second round.

Up against her was Camila Giorgi, who had had a decent outing last week in Palermo and she tested Mertens in the opening set. It was a tough start for the Dutchwoman as she fell 2-0 behind in the first set and was a point away from losing another game.

Mertens gradually came back to level the set and then zoomed past Giorgi with another break of serve to capture the set. And once she had grasped control of the match, Mertens wasted no time in dictating terms to her opponent by crushing her 6-2 in the second set, needing a total of just an hour and 44 minutes to get to the last eight.

This is her third quarterfinal of the season, having made it there at Shenzhen and Auckland too.

Determined Bouchard Makes Another Quarterfinal

Things have gone so horribly wrong for Bouchard she has fallen to 330th in the world but her second quarterfinal of the year should help her feel a lot more confident going into the rest of the season, whatever the result of this match.

Playing against Tamara Zidansek, she avenged her defeat at the hands of this opponent in a match which went the distance. Two tie-breakers constituted the first two sets before Bouchard took control of the encounter in the final set to wrap up the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 and move into the last eight.

The former Wimbledon finalist who was an Auckland Open quarterfinalist, had a chance to make it easy for herself when she won the first set and took a 4-1 lead in the second. However, Zidansek fought back to level the proceedings. Bouchard wrested back the initiative then, ensuring there would be no last-minute shenanigans.

Bouchard had earlier routed Veronika Kudermetova in the first round.
