It wasn’t expected to be a straightforward win for Serena but she was in a spot of bother for sure against Venus Williams in her previous match. She was a break up early in the match but then crashed to a loss of the opening set.
Serena fought back to win the next and level things off but her usual clinical self was missing from her game when she fell 4-2 behind in the final set. Venus had a chance to even go 5-2 up but the champion in Serena responded strongly to finish off the match and clinch her quarterfinal berth.
This win came on the back of a first round showing against Bernarda Pera, where she had lost her opening set too. She did make a comeback there but the rustiness was very evident. And now that something similar has happened in the second round too, it will be interesting to see how she goes in the tournament ahead.

Rogers Inching Towards Career-Best
Shelby Rogers was 743rd in the world last season, but began a turnaround with a couple of solid showing in the ITF circuit in the latter part of the season. It started at Templeton where she defeated Coco Vandeweghe in the final while at Macon, she was a losing finalist.
Her best showing at the WTA level, however, was a second round appearance at the French Open and in Mallorca.
It was no better earlier this year either, when she lost in the second round at the Shenzhen Open and qualified for the Australian Open only to lose her opener – both times to Garbine Muguruza.
Which is why this showing here in Lexington where she has beaten both, Misaki Doi and Leylah Fernandez is a lot to like about. Serena Williams is a different cup of tea altogether but Rogers can feel immensely proud of her showing so far.
