Jabeur Lost To Coco Gauff in Lexington

Could lightning strike twice? Or in this case, could Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur fall to yet another teenager in as many weeks?

We will certainly find out, but one suspects the 25-year-old will have had plenty of time to digest and reassess her quarterfinal defeat in Lexington to Coco Gauff.

Jabeur has played some inspired tennis this year, with her run to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open being a major achievement in her career. Eventually, she was beaten by eventual champion Sofia Kenin down under. During the Middle Eastern swing, she made the round of 16 in Dubai where she lost to Simona Halep, and the quarterfinals of Doha where she fell narrowly to Petra Kvitova.

Some of Jabeur’s defeats illustrate the progress she has made. It has taken Grand Slam champions to stop her and the Tunisian trailblazer will look to dampen the disappointment of losing to Gauff last week when she plays Leylah Fernandez.

Fernandez is Canada’s Lone Woman This Week

Leylah Fernandez is Canada’s sole representative in the women’s field at this week’s Western & Southern Open in New York. Players have to win two qualifying matches to earn a spot in the main draw, and that was the task in store for the 111th-ranked Fernandez.

She breezed past Anna Blinkova of Russia without dropping serve 6-1 6-4, before following suit against Kristie Ahn of the United States in another straight sets domination in somewhat symmetrical scoreline 6-4 6-1.

This is now a second successive main draw qualification for the 17-year-old following her exploits in Lexington where she scored a major upset against former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the opening round (her second win over the American this year).

Before the suspension of tennis on tour, Fernandez was in the midst of compiling a promising campaign. She qualified for her first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. And in February, despite Canada’s elimination from the Fed Cup at the hands of Switzerland, she shocked then world no.5 Belinda Bencic.

A month later at the Mexican Open, she reached her maiden WTA final where she lost to Heather Watson of Great Britain in three sets.

Jabeur v Fernandez Prediction & Tip

Jabeur is an intelligent tennis player; she can mix things up with her excellent hands and make life really uncomfortable for Fernandez who is still learning the trade on point construction.

With that said, we should not underestimated the young Canadian, who has bags of potential and a bright star for the future. A second successive defeat to a teenager could be in the making for the Tunisian woman.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
