Magda Linette v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head

This will be a first-ever meeting between these two players.

Patience Paying Off For Poland’s No.1

At the age of 28, Magda Linette has been in the form of her life in the past eight months, winning her first two WTA titles in the Bronx last August and Hua Hin Championships this year. She also made the finals in Seoul last September, sandwiched between those two triumphs.

As recently as June last year, the Pole was ranked at No.96 in the world, but that mesmeric run of form which also included an ITF title win on the lawns of Manchester saw her ascend to a new career-high of World No.33. It had been five long years for Linette to crack the world’s top-50, but as she says, in her life she has needed ‘more time for everything’.

Perhaps the most telling springboard of her renaissance was her decision to hire British coach Mark Gellard in 2018. Together with Gellard, they have given tennis numbers more interpretation in a view to exploit an opponent’s weakness.

Zvonareva A Former Semifinalist in Cincinnati

Vera Zvonareva is among the active moms competing at this year’s Western & Southern Open and she returns to the city with very fond memories.

The former World No.2 reached both of her Grand Slam singles finals ten years ago. Right after her run to the Wimbledon final, she went all the way at Flushing Meadows, upsetting No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinal, before falling to defending champion Kim Clijsters.

Zvonareva delivered a statement of intent on her return to New York. She brushed aside Danka Kovinic 6-2 6-2 in the first round of qualifying before easing to another straight sets win against Astra Sharma of Australian to book her spot in the main draw.

Linette v Zvonareva Prediction & Tip

Linette has been in great shape and form for quite some time now and she should be odds on to win here. However, given how emphatic her wins in qualifying were, Zvonareva won’t go down without a fight in this one. Expect a close contest to be decided by narrow margins.

Tip: Over 21.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
