Dayana Yastremska v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from the previous two meetings, with Pera winning at Charleston in 2018 and the Ukrainian winning at New Haven the same year. Both the matches were three set affairs.

Yastremska Comes Back To Conquer Venus

World No. 25 Dayana Yastremska fought back from a set down to knock Venus Williams out of the competition in the first round on Saturday. A match that swung from one end to the other saw the Ukrainian shake off an injury scare in the first set before making a valiant comeback to win the dramatic contest 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

Venus, who was down 2-4 in the first set, won five consecutive games to take the initiative away from the Ukrainian, who had rolled her right ankle during the set and needed a medical timeout.

Unsettled by the injury and with momentum lost, Yastremska had a mountain to climb, but the determined 20-year-old wasn’t ready to surrender and fought her way back into the match. She was dominant in the second set, forcing the decider and then held her nerves to clinch the match in two hours and 36 minutes.

One of the most promising young stars on the Tour, Yastremska is 3-1 since the return of women’s tennis following the break due to the pandemic. She won her first two rounds in Palermo this month before losing in the quarterfinals to Camila Giorgi.

Yastremska was off to a great start in 2020, reaching the final of Adelaide International, only to finish runner-up to Ashleigh Barty.

However, she could not replicate her Adelaide performance in the following tournaments, exiting from the Australian Open in the second round, failing to win a single match in Dubai and losing to Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round in Qatar before WTA suspended the tournaments due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

A three-time winner on the Tour, Yastremska will be taking a lot of confidence from the come-from-behind win against the veteran Venus and will be hoping for a longer run in the tournament. But first she will have to deal with her next round opponent, Bernarda Pera.

Pera Outlasts Watson

Ranked 61 in the world, 25-year-old Pera needed one hour and 44 minutes to defeat Britain’s Heather Watson 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The Croatia-born left-handed American, who took a set off Serena Williams at the Top Seed Open earlier this month, has won 9 singles titles at the ITF level.

Pera, who achieved her career-high ranking of 59 in March this year, has a 7-6 record in 2020 and will be looking to cause an upset in the second round to extend her win record.

Dayana Yastremska v Bernarda Pera Prediction & Tip

Yastremska has come a long way since their 2018 face-offs. She should breeze past Pera in two sets. However, Pera would sense an opportunity if Yastremska shows any signs of the injury she picked against Williams in the first round.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
