Defending Champion Medvedev Hoping for a Bright Start
When the 24-year-old was the last playing in the Cincinnati Open, he was in the middle of a phenomenal run where he reached finals of six consecutive tournaments.
In fact, after losing in the finals at Washington and Montreal, it was here at Cincinnati where he finally won a final and followed it up with an amazing US Open campaign.
He would be looking to do something similar this year too. He is the third seed this year at the event. Medvedev will be looking to make the most of a weakened line up to defend his title. The Russian received a first-round bye this week. He would be eager to ensure that he has a winning start to his comeback match post the season suspension in March.
His start to the 2020 season was a mixed bag. After reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open, he suffered early-round exits at Rotterdam and Marseille. Thus a break from tennis would have recharged his batteries and he would be hoping for a similar North American hardcourt run like the one he had last year.

The 27-year-old American has had a solid campaign in New York so far. He had a tough qualifying draw but did well to reach the main draw and then dispatched off fellow American Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets.
What this win has ensured is that he is certainly going to break into the top 100 rankings for the first time after being so close to doing so since November of last year.
With his first-round win, Giron also completed 250 wins on the hard courts with a win percentage of almost 66%. Even though most of those victories came on the futures and ITF events, its a stat that shows how much he fancies this surface.

An American qualifier on an impressive run against a Russian heavyweight. If this was a match with crowds, it would have been a mouthwatering contest with Giron having the backing of supporters. Not so here.
