Victoria Azarenka v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

Strangely, despite Azarenka having been a former world number one and winning of multiple Grand Slam titles, all her matches – a total of three of them – have resulted in defeats to Garcia. They have come over the past two years though, when Azarenka’s form had dipped badly, including one at this very stage in Cincinnati in 2018.

Azarenka Finally Wins a Match

It’s quite sad to see the decline of Azarenka’s tennis but a win against Donna Vekic should give her an iota of confidence. After all, when a player with 20 titles including a couple of Grand Slams under her belt struggles to win matches, having registered no wins this year till before the Vekic encounter, it does not feel very good.

In fact, in the four matches Azarenka had played this season including one during the break in an exhibition tournament, the Belarusian hadn’t won a single set. A 6-3, 6-2 drubbing at the hands of Venus Williams in Lexington was the latest blow she had had to endure.

Which is also why that Azarenka victory over Vekic might not signal a turnaround but it is a step in the right direction for the champion player. A win over the 24th-ranked Vekic is her best result since last year’s Cincinnati Open where she had overcome Belinda Bencic.

What she would now hope for is to push an opponent who has gotten the better of her every time they have taken to court.

Garcia Continues Stephens Misery

In some ways, Garcia and Azarenka have had similar results this year. Sure Garcia had already won matches before her first round victory against Sloane Stephens but it had been a struggle.

Regular first round losses, including one at Hobart, St. Petersburg Open and Qatar Open had resulted in a fall in rankings for Garcia, and while she made it to the quarterfinals at the Lyon Open, it turned out to be the last tournament she participated in before the pandemic took over our lives.

Garcia opted not to play any exhibition tournaments during that time either so she was coming into the Cincinnati Open a tad rusty, much like Azarenka but was lucky to be facing an opponent enduring form issues of her own. Slephens has barely won anything this season an Garcia ensured it stayed that way with a straight-set win over the former US Open champion.

Victoria Azarenka v Caroline Garcia Prediction & Tip

Azarenka is 4/6 to win this one but we will be backing Garcia in this one for her slightly better form this season than her opponent. That, and the fact she has beaten Azarenka thrice in three matches should give her enough confidence here.

Tip: Garcia to win: 11/10 (bet365)
