Johanna Konta v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head

This is a first meeting on tour between these two players.

Konta Trounced Flipkens In Her Opener

Johanna Konta suffered with heart palpitations at the Top Seed Open in Lexington a couple of weeks ago as she went down 6-4 6-4 to Marie Bouzkova in the first round. It was Konta’s first WTA match since reaching the semifinals in Monterrey, where incidentally, she also lost to the 22-year-old Czech player.

The British No.1 insisted after the match she was ‘absolutely fine’ despite needing medical attention just minutes after that match started.

There was no such scare on her first outing at the Western & Southern Open where she demolished Kirsten Flipkens 6-2 6-0 in a flawless display. She won 86% of points behind her first serve, and broke the Belgian five times in a thoroughly one-sided affair.

Konta has taken a while to get going in 2020. After nursing a knee injury which caused her to shut down her 2019 season following her US Open quarterfinal defeat to Svitolina, she failed to win a match in her first three tournaments of this year in Brisbane, Australian Open and St. Petersburg.

It was in Monterrey where her game ticked all the boxes, and in somewhat unfortunate circumstances, the Covid-19 pandemic struck just when she was building some momentum.

Zvonareva Rolling Back The Years

It is now ten years to the day when Vera Zvonareva reached her second Grand Slam final at the US Open.

Now at 35, and very much on her last legs despite making a comeback from motherhood and retirement, she is still believing of one glorious swansong. Who knows, with the unpredictability and tumultuous season we have had, could that scenario materialize in the next fortnight?

It would certainly be one heck of an achievement. But before action at Flushing Meadows, Zvonareva will attempt to make a deep run at the Western & Southern Open, which is of course being held in New York. The Russian veteran has done ever so well to re-establish herself as a member of the top-100 (currently dropped down to No.270).

She demonstrated her enduring quality with brilliant wins in the qualifying rounds against Danka Kovinic and Astra Sharma. Two wins followed suit in the main draw, coming from a set down to beat an in-form Magda Linette, and then dispatching Laura Siegemund 6-1 6-1.

Can she keep up that terrific run of form when she faces the British No.1?

Konta v Zvonareva Prediction & Tip

Konta has struggled immensely this year in most events she has played. Sometimes you just don’t know what exactly is in store with the British No.1. Zvonareva has acclimatized herself well with the conditions in New York, having already played four matches. This match is in Konta’s racket. If she plays to her abilities, she will win.

Tip: Konta to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
