Novak Djokovic v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

These two have played each other twice before this and on both occasions, Djokovic came out a winner. Both those matches came in 2018 and at Grand Slams – Wimbledon and US Open – and Sandgren will take some positive out of how their encounter at the US Open went. While Djokovic won that one, it wasn’t before Sandgren had won a set off his much-vaunted opponent.

Djokovic Grinds it Out to a Win

It wasn’t as straightforward a return to competitive tennis as Djokovic would have liked but he would be glad to have made it through in straight sets against Ricardas Berankis. Taken to a tie-breaker in the first set, Djokovic found his mojo in the second to complete a 7-6, 6-2 victory and make round three.

What was interesting was Djokovic lost serve very early in both sets before he had to break back and level proceedings. Both those return breaks happened immediately in the next game and that’s what allowed the world number one to get away without too much trouble.

However, Djokovic, who hasn’t lost a single match on the ATP tour this year, did face some trouble with his neck. Having withdrawn from the doubles draw where he was scheduled to partner Filip Krajinovic, Djokovic needed a medical timeout in which he was attended to for his neck, which admitted affected his serving.

Serving seven double-faults, Djokovic will now hope his neck issue settles down a little as the matches come thick and fast now leading up to and even at the US Open.

Sandgren Shock for Auger-Aliassime

Having nearly surprised Roger Federer at the Australian Open, it’s Sandgren’s chance now to deliver a similar blow on the world number one. In that match against Federer, Sandgren had seven match-points but muffed up each one of them to go down to the Swiss maestro.

Interestingly, had Sandgren won that match against Federer, he would have faced Djokovic in the semifinal of the season’s first Grand Slam. Instead he was left with lot to think about what went wrong for him.

Here, he will hope he can take his chances against a player who has been nearly flawless all season, having played and won 19 matches already. And to get to that stage, Sandgren has shown remarkable mental toughness in both his matches so far.

The world number 55 first defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 7-6 (7) before needing to overturn a break of serve in the final set to win his second round match against Felix Auger-Aliassime. He needed nearly three hours before pulling off a remarkable victory from a set down, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 to advance to the third round.

Novak Djokovic v Tennys Sandgren Prediction & Tip

Djokovic has complained about his neck which can be factor, especially with the US Open looming. That is also why Sandgren might give himself a teeny-weeny chance. Djokovic might still win but could see a few games played in this encounter.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
