At one stage in his second round match against Emil Ruusuvuori, it looked like the world number eight was on his way to a routine victory. Up a set and serving for the match at 5-4, Berrettini seemed to have served an ace at 40-30 to clinch the match.
It turned out to be a let.
And the match turned on that let. Ruusuvuori came back strongly to break back in that game and took the set in a tie-breaker. And in the third set, when Berrettini missed on four more match-points it looked like it was going to be Ruusuvuori’s day.
The Italian, however, fought on and broke his opponent at 6-5 in the final set to clinch the encounter and reach the third round – his joint second-best showing at a Masters competition.
A quarterfinal awaits him if he can play with the kind of consistency he has on hard court surfaces over the past three seasons.

Opelka Continues to Make Merry
American world number 39 Opelka has faced no trouble so far. In the first round he met Cameron Norrie, a player one thought would make life a lot tougher than he eventually did.
More vitally, however, Opelka dashed through to the third round with a stunning 6-3, 7-6 win over the ninth seeded Diego Schwartzman. While we had reckoned Opelka had it in him to spring a surprise, the way he wrapped up the first set with ease and then settled into a solid routine of not losing serve in the second to clinch it in the tie-breaker would have been awe-inspiring.
Opelka would be no pushover in this match either. His last ATP tournament, after all, was on the hard court surfaces of the Delray Beach Open, and it was one which he went on to win.
A dream to become the top-ranked American player this year remains a possibility for Opelka.

While Berrettini is the favourite here at 4/7, the better value is in the number of games which could be played in the first set. We expect it to be difficult to break Opelka but solid defending from Berrettini could push it towards a tie-breaker.
