Fritz Expected to Do Better than Last Year in New York

Taylor Fritz is the second-ranked American after John Isner, and he shot up the world rankings last year, after reaching three finals, winning his maiden ATP title in Eastbourne, and finishing as runner-up in Acapulco and Los Cabos. He has already been in one final this year as well, losing in straight sets to Rafael Nadal in February in the Mexican Open.

Fritz won the US Open as a junior in 2015 and was a beaten finalist in Paris that same year, but he has yet to go beyond the third round in any senior Gram Slam. Last year, he was seeded in New York for the first time, but suffered the disappointment of a first-round loss to Feliciano Lopez.

Apart from that run in Mexico, his best performance prior to lockdown came in Melbourne, where he got to the third round before losing to Dominic Thiem in four sets.

Last week at the Cincinnati Open, he beat Luke Harris of South Africa in the first-round, but then lost in straight sets to the world 61, Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia.
