They met once, five years ago in Bad Gastein, Austria, with Martic winning the clay-court encounter in straight sets.

With quite a few top players not making the trip to New York this year, the focus is on some less fancied stars to make a mark in the tournament. One of those players is World No. 14, Petra Martic of Croatia, who is seeded eighth in the tournament.
The 29-year-old Martic, who captured her first WTA singles title in Istanbul last year, also made a maiden quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam in 2019, reaching the last eight at Roland Garros before being beaten by tournament runner-up Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets.
She also bettered her previous best performance at the U.S. Open in 2019, going past the second round for the first time and reaching the Round of 16 before bowing out to Serena Williams, who finished runner-up in the final against Bianca Andreescu.
Since the resumption of tennis this month after a five-month suspension, Martic has featured in two events, reaching the semifinals in Palermo and exiting from the Round of 16 stage in Prague. She is 9-7 year-to-date in singles and will be looking to make a major impact at Flushing Meadows this season.
If she gets past the first hurdle she will either meet Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko or American Allie Kiick in the next round. Going by seedings, she is expected to reach the last eight this year for a potential clash with top seed Karolina Pliskova.

Martincova Will Find the Going Tough
For someone who is yet to win a main draw match at a Grand Slam, the going will be tough once again. Last year, Tereza Martincova lost to Karolina Pliskova in the first round of the U.S. Open in what was only her third main draw appearance at a major.
The 25-year-old Czech has won four singles titles at the ITF circuit but has struggled to make an impact at the top level. Her best performance in 2020 came at the Qatar Open, where she qualified for the main draw by beating Krystina Pliskova and Misaki Doi in the qualifiers and then again defeated the latter in the first round to reach the Round of 32, only to lose to Maria Sakkari in three sets.
Although she comes into the tournament with a 10-7 win-loss record in 2020, Martincova will have to punch above her weight to cause an upset against Martic.
