Zhang Shuai v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head
Two previous meetings between Shuai and Bonaventure have resulted in a win for each player but while Bonaventure’s victory came at the WTA Bol, Shuai won at an ITF competition in 2017.

Returning to competitive tennis for the first time after the pandemic break, Shuai featured in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open earlier this week. Unfortunately her rustiness came to the fore as she lost in straight sets to Yulia Putinseva.
Overall, it’s been a curious sort of a season for Shuai Zhang, who made it all the way to the final of the Hobart International with wins over Lauren Davis and Veronika Kudermetova before losing to Elena Rybakina. That competition aside, however, Zhang has had a middling 2020 season.
She bowed out in the second round at the Shenzhen Open, and then made it as far as the third round at the Australian Open. Unfortunately, following that, things seemed to have fallen away for the Chinese player as she failed to make it past the qualifiers in Dubai and lost in round one at the Qatar Open.

Bonaventure Aiming for First Major Main Draw Win
Having first played in a Grand Slam qualifier in 2015, it took her four years to qualify for the main draw of a major when she made the first round of the Australian Open last year. She lost that match and followed it up with another opening round defeat at Wimbledon.
In the meantime, however, Bonaventure did put up her best showing in a Premier competition too, as her first main draw appearance in the 2019 Indian Wells Open led to two wins – over Taylor Townsend and Donna Vekic – before she fell to Karolina Pliskova in the third round.
This year Bonaventure has won just one main draw match at a WTA tournament, but did lift one ITF tournament title in February. Can she make this main draw appearance count?
