Sloane Stephens v Mihaela Buzarnescu Head to Head
This will be the first time ever that Stephens and Buzarnescu will be facing off in a competitive encounter.

You read that right. The former world number three and US Open winner Stephens has won just one match on the WTA circuit this season.
Sure the season has been a curtailed and rhythm has been an issue for many players but Stephens has participated in seven tournaments so far this year. And won just one round, losing her opener in the other six.
It started with the Brisbane International where she went down to Luidmila Samsonova, and followed it up with opening round defeats at the Adelaide International, Australian Open and Acapulco. Her maiden win of the year came at Monterrey and it was followed by another string of losses on either side of the pandemic break.
Despite having played in the World TeamTennis, her return to WTA tennis following the break saw her lose in straight sets to Leylah Fernandez and Caroline Garcia in rounds one of the Lexington Open and Cincinnati Open respectively.

Buzarnescu Yet to Play a Match This Year
The Romanian had a very underwhelming last season as she careened from one loss to another and fell to 109th in the world. Buzarnescu’s issues were related to her injury, having suffered an ankle injury which made it difficult to play.
Adding to the woes was the fact she tried to protect the issue but ending up causing problems to her shoulder and the rupture of the super-spinal tendon. As a result she has been unable to play any tennis this season either and combined with the coronavirus pandemic, things haven’t looked good for Buzarnescu.
Having never progressed beyond the first round at the US Open, this could be her chance though, given her opponent’s extremely poor form. Only trouble is her own lack of tennis for a while which would make it a lot tougher than otherwise.

Stephens starts off as a heavy favourite here with odds of 3/10 for her win as compared to Buzarnescu’s 5/2. Stephens, while we think should come through, might be stretched here. Looking at a slightly longer encounter.
