This will be the first meeting between the World No. 20 Kontaveit and World No. 53 Collins.

Kontaveit is Well Prepared

While most players will be a bit rusty having not played much since tennis got suspended in March, Annett Kontaveit will be very happy with the amount of court time she has had ahead of the U.S. Open.

The Estonian has played 9 matches since the lifting of the lockdown, and that includes a run to the final in Palermo and the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Open.

A dangerous player with a range of shots, Kontaveit has a 15-7 win-loss record this year, which also saw her reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, which was her best ever showing at a Grand Slam.

The 24-year-old’s most notable performance in Melbourne was the 6-0, 6-1 demolition of sixth seed Belinda Bencic. She was, however, outclassed by the power of Simona Halep in the quarterfinal.

Kontaveit also made it to the last eight in Dubai, earlier this year, but was stopped from progressing further by Croatia’s Petra Martic. The Estonian got her revenge against Martic earlier this month, beating the top seed in the semifinals in Palermo.

However, she couldn’t add to her only WTA singles title, losing to France’s Fiona Ferro in the final. At the Cincinnati Open, she reached the quarterfinals with relative ease, but couldn’t go past 2018 U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka, despite winning the first set.

She comes into the tournament with fair amount of match practice and would like to use it to her advantage against Collins.

Under-Prepared Collins Looking to Shake Off the Rust

Danielle Collins had a decent start to the year, reaching the quarterfinals in Brisbane and semifinals in Adelaide before falling in the second round of the Australian Open to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. Since then she has only played at the Cincinnati Open, where she was beaten by Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in the first round in straight sets.

An extremely aggressive player, known for her ferocious strokeplay, Collins (7-3 this year) has been impressive over the last couple of years and caught the attention of the world when she stormed into the semis of the Australian Open in 2019.

It remains her best Grand Slam showing and on her way she defeated quality players like Julia Gorges, Angelique Kerber and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, before falling to Petra Kvitova in semis.

The winner of this first round clash will next play the winner of the Usue Arconada and Kaja Juvan match. If either of Kontaveit or Collins keep progressing they could be up against Naomi Osaka in the fourth round of the U.S. Open.
