Milos Raonic v Leonardo Mayer Head to Head

Raonic leads the series 1-0, having beaten the season veteran in their only meeting at the Madrid Masters in 2015.

Raonic In Top Form After Cincinnati Masters’ Run

Milos Raonic made his first final at an ATP Masters 1000 event in four-and-half years when reached the championship match at the Western & Southern Open on Saturday. He briefly threatened to end Novak Djokovic’s unbeaten run in 2020 when he sailed past the Serbian World No.1 to take the first set 6-1 in under half an hour.

The in-form Canadian then broke Djokovic in the decider, but failed to consolidate. In the end a Djokovic comeback seemed inevitable as he lost 6-1 3-6 4-6.

Raonic’s losing streak against the Serb now stands at an incredible 11-0, but the unseeded 29-year-old had a fine week in which he outlasted some dangerous floaters including Dan Evans, Filip Krajinovic and the World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas with embarrassing ease.

Raonic slipped out of the top-10 in 2017 and has not returned since, battling injuries for lengthy periods. However, this he is on the ascent once more, and his booming serve will remain lethal on the US hard courts.

Mayer Yet To Win A Match in 2020

Leonardo Mayer finished his 2019 season on a high note by tying the knot with his longtime partner Milagros Aventin. The one-handed Argentine’s on-court highlights last season included a fourth-round finish at Roland Garros and a pair of tour-level quarterfinals in Umag and Auckland.

Mayer also excelled in doubles by producing his best Grand Slam result with a semifinal finish at the Australian Open, in addition to a quarterfinal showing at the US Open (with Joao Sousa).

The 33-year-old hasn’t been in the best forms in 2020. He has played six tournaments in total before the tour was shutdown and he lost in the first round in all of those events. Could he post his first win of the year and send shock waves across the tournament by eliminating the much-fancied Raonic?

Raonic v Mayer Prediction & Tip

Raonic seems to have hit a purple patch. He was agonizingly close to become the first Canadian man to win a Masters 1000 title until Djokovic dug into his deep reservoirs to make a comeback and deny him glory. Still, it was a positive week on so many levels for the former Wimbledon finalist. Expect him to bulldoze his way past Mayer in this one.

Tip: Raonic to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
