Mertens in Top Form

It’s been a pretty good August for 16th seed Elise Mertens. She was beaten in the first match that she played in Palermo, but since then she has an 8-2 win-loss record, reaching the final of the Prague Open and the semifinal of the Cincinnati Open.

In Prague, the 24-year-old lost to Simona Halep in the final, while at the Cincinnati Open, she was beaten by two-time major winner Naomi Osaka, who injured her hamstring during the second-set tie-breaker, and pulled out of the final, allowing Victoria Azarenka to be crowned the champion.

A semifinalist at the 2018 Australian Open, Mertens reached the singles quarterfinals of the U.S. Open last year, winning her first four rounds with ease, without dropping a set. In the quarterfinal, she went down fighting against the eventual champion Bianca Andreescu. Out of the singles competition, the Belgian went on to win the doubles title along with Aryna Sabalenka, after the pair defeated Ashleigh Barty and Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in the final.

A winner of five singles and nine doubles WTA titles, Mertens made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open, earlier this year, where she lost to Simona Halep in straight sets. Before that she had reached the quarterfinals at the Shenzhen Open and Hobart International. Overall, it has been a decent year for Mertens, who enters the U.S. Open with a 19-8 singles record in 2020.

Mertens is projected to meet Sofia Kenin in the fourth round and if she advances further, there could be a possible meeting with either Sabalenka or Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals.

Siegemund is a Tough Opponent

Germany’s Laura Siegemund has time and again shown that she can cause an upset in the women’s game. The 2016 Olympic quarterfinalist comes into the tournament with a 14-7 record in 2020.

At the Cincinnati Open she defeated 10th-seed Marketa Vandrousova in an intriguing three-setter to reach the Round of 32, where she was outclassed by Vera Zvonareva.

A former World No. 27, Siegemund has two singles and five doubles titles in the WTA Tour. The 32-year-old has never gone past the third round in a major, having reached there only twice, both in 2016, in the first and final slams of the year. Last year, she made it to the second round of all four majors and this year she defeated CoCo Vandeweghe in straight sets in the first round in Melbourne, before falling to Karolina Pliskova in the next round.

She began the year at the ASB Classic, defeating Caty McNally and Cori Gauff on her way to the quarterfinals before being beaten by Serena Williams.

Mertens is in good touch but will be wary of Siegemund’s knack of pulling surprises.
