This is her third appearance at the US Open and Rybakina has already pushed past her previous best. Having lost in the qualifiers in 2018 and in the first round in 2019, Rybakina has now made it to the second round here with a masterful performance against Katarina Zavatska.
Rybakina needed just 67 minutes to win 6-3, 6-0 and move into the second round following a period of 18 months or so in which the Kazakh has made waves on the tennis circuit. Ranked 17th in the world, which is currently her career-best, Rybakina’s first WTA title came last season on the clay court of Bucharest before she made it to the top 20 on the WTA charts earlier this season.
In this period, she has defeated Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep and Caroline Garcia to carve out a name for herself on the women’s circuit as one of the names to watch out in the future and clinched a second WTA title too.
So much so, Rybakina is currently 20/1 to win the title too, joint-sixth favourite at the tournament currently. She might be playing a very experienced player in this encounter but her form is too delicious to look away.

Rogers Has Shown Signs of Form
While Rogers played in a few tournaments during the pandemic break, her focus was chiefly on clay surfaces while featuring in just one hard court competition which was held in USA – the Grand Slam Tennis Tours MatchPlay.
Rogers won and lost two apiece in that tournament, but then in her very first WTA tournament on the resumption of the sport, the American shocked Serena Williams on her way to the semifinal. It came at the Lexington Open where she defeated Misaki Doi and Leylah Fernandez before her Williams win and finally went down to Jil Teichmann in the last four.
She has now started off the US Open with a very comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over Irina Khromacheva, but that was on expected lines given her opponent’s world ranking for 674th in the world. Now comes a big test but can anything get any bigger than defeating Serena?
