Karolina Muchova v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between Muchova and Kalinskaya at the WTA level but they did face off on the ITF circuit where Muchova came through in three sets.

Muchova Sends Williams Packing

At the time Muchova had last played Kalinskaya in that ITF competition, she was ranked around 230th in the world. That was in March 2018. In a matter of little over two years, Muchova has touched a career-best of 21st in the world and currently ranked 26th.

This has been thanks to a solid 2019 season in which she made it to the quarterfinal of Wimbledon, semifinal of the WTA Elite Trophy and won her maiden WTA title at the Korea Open. Earlier that year, Muchova was the losing finalist at the Prague Open as well, going down to Jil Teichmann.

Which is why Muchova might not very pleased with her performances this season. There have been first round defeats at the Brisbane International and WTA Dubai and second round losses at the Australian Open, Qatar Open and Cincinnati Open, and while some of them have been to opponents of much higher pedigree – like Kiki Bertens and Naomi Osaka – she would have liked to push on in at least some of those tournaments.

A straight-set win over Venus Williams in the first round here at the US Open goes a long way in boosting her morale and an easier second round opponent should give Muchova a chance to emulate her best US Open showing so far.

Kalinskaya Finally Wins an Opener

There have been five previous tournaments that the 110th-ranked Kalinskaya has featured in so far this season, and never made it past the first round. At three of those, the Russian went through the grind of the qualifiers and made the main draw but lost her opener.

Which is why defeating Nina Stojanovic in her first round match and doing that in straight sets will come as bit of a relief for Kalinskaya. After all not too long ago, she had revealed she had tested positive for Covid-19 and while she recovered quickly after that, it’s always good to see someone take to court and register a win following the illness.

Kalinskaya’s best showing at a Grand Slam had come at the US Open too, when she came through the qualifiers to beat the 11th seed Sloane Stephens in the first round. Now she has a 20th seed in front of her and a career-best majors showing as an incentive.

Muchova v Kalinskaya Prediction & Tip

Muchova is 1/4 to win this and while we expect a similar result, we also think Kalinskaya might be in for a tussle. Looking for the over-games market.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
