Donna Vekic v Patricia Maria Tig Head to Head

The pair have met three times before, and Vekic leads their head to head series by two matches to one. Tig won their quarter-final in Baku in 2015, but Vekic was victorious in their two matches in 2017, first in Monterrey and then at the Canadian Open.

Vekic Hoping to Match Last Year’s Run in New York

Vekic reached the quarter-final in New York last year, her best ever result in a Grand Slam, and will be hoping for another good run in the tournament this time round.

However, she was made to work all the way for her second-round place, having been pushed hard by Kristyna, the lower ranked of the Pliskova twin sisters, in their first-round match on Tuesday.

Vekic broke early in the first set, only to surrender her advantage three games later. However, she was able to break again to win the first set. The second set swung first one way, and then the other, and culminated in a tie-break, which Pliskova eventually won by 8 points to six.

However, in the third set, Vekic forced the all-important break, and was able to hold on to close out the match.

It was a tough test for the 24-year old, who has won two senior WTA titles, the Malaysia Open in 2014, and the Nottingham Open three years later. There have been no senior successes since then, although she did make two finals last year – in St. Petersburg and again in Nottingham.

First-Timer in Grand Slam Second Round, Tig

Despite the fact that she has been a professional since 2009, this is the first time that Tig has been beyond the first round in a Grand Slam event.

And she did it in style, thrashing Kurumi Nara of Japan in straight sets for the loss of just one game, in a match that barely lasted an hour.

Tig has never won a senior WTA tournament, although she has been in two finals – the Baku Cup in 2015, and her home event of the Bucharest Open last July, when she was beaten by Elena Rybakina. In between those two events, though, she had more than a year out of the sport with a back injury, and only returned to competitive action last April.

Since the resumption of her career, she has played a lot of tennis on the ITF circuit where she has been in five finals, winning two of them.

However, she lost the two she played this year before lockdown – in Canberra, and Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Donna Vekic v Patricia Maria Tig Prediction & Tip

Vekic will start clear favourite against a player ranked 64 places below her in the world. It should be a relatively easy task for the 18th seed to reach the third round.

Tip: Vekic to win to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
