Cilic Comes Back From The Dead To Reach Round Two

It has been six yeas since Marin Cilic defied the odds to claim his one and only Grand Slam singles title in front of a  packed and rollicking New York crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. And on Tuesday evening, in a quieter Court 7, the big-hitting Croat needed to channel all of his fighting qualities to beat a determined opponent in Denis Kudla.

Cilic trailed the American by two sets to love, and was staring at his earliest exit at the US Open in almost 10 years. However, for the eighth time in his career he fought back from a two-set deficit to win the match, and he is now tied with Roger Federer as the undisputed king in five sets. No player among the current active roster has won more five set matches than the pair of them.

It has been a roller coaster year for the 31-year-old who is playing his in his first Grand Slam as a father. He is trying to recapture his best tennis after a knee injury contributed to his big fall from grace in 2019.

He is 10-8 for the season, with his best result coming at the Australian Open where he reached the fourth round, beating the likes of Benoit Paire and Roberto Bautista Agut along the way. His return after the pandemic-imposed pause brought an early exit at the Cincinnati Masters at the hands of Denis Shapovalov.

Gombos Won His First Grand Slam Match

Norbert Gombos, a season veteran on the ATP Challenger tour, earned his first Grand Slam match win of his career when he beat Radu Albot in straight sets in his opening round match on Tuesday.

Gombos, currently ranked no.104 in the world, has been unable to make a full-time transition to the senior tour since turning pro in 2009. However, the 30-year-old does have a knack of producing his best tennis at the French 250s. He reached his first ATP quarterfinal in Marseille in 2017 – the same year he also broke into the top-100 for the first time, peaking at no.81.

The Slovak saved his best for Montpellier earlier this year where he reached the quarterfinals, taking out Pablo Carreno Busta and highly talented Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.

He won a pair of Challenger titles last year in a highly productive season which he recorded a 50-29 win-loss record.

Cilic v Gombos Prediction & Tip

Gombos is a solid shot-maker with lots of talent, but even in the second round of Grand Slam, he is in uncharted waters. Assuming Cilic is focused from the get go, he should progress comfortably.

Tip: Cilic to win in four sets: 11/4 (bet365)
