Osaka Improves First Match Showing

It was a destructive performance from Naomi Osaka in her second round win over Camila Giorgi following concerns about her fitness. Having withdrawn from the final of the Cincinnati Open last week and having been stretched to three sets in her opener here by Misaki Doi, Osaka came into her own in the second round.

In a clinical display, Osaka benefited from her opponent’s mistakes, 24 of them unforced errors, and broke Giorgi four times in the match she won 6-1, 6-2. In turn she faced just two break points in the entire encounter and wasn’t tested by either.

In making it to the third round, Osaka has now done that five successive years and pinned her win down to how she was able to play her own brand of attacking tennis despite Giorgi’s similar style. And that came through in the manner in which she raced off to a 5-0 lead in the first set.

By the time Giorgi recovered from that start, Osaka had already broken her early in the second set and finished it off with another break of serve towards the end.

Teenager Kostyuk Sends out Sevastova

Anastasija Sevastova might not have been in the form of her life this season but she sure was on a high heading into her second round match against Marta Kostyuk, having just beaten 16-year-old Cori Gauff in her opener.

Against her second teenage opponent in a row, however, Sevastova fell flat as the 18-year-old Kostyuk coasted to her second straight-set win of the tournament.

The juniors Australian Open singles winner from 2017 clinched the encounter 6-3, 7-6 to enter the third round, her joint-best showing in Grand Slam tennis. Two years ago, at the Australian Open, the 15-year-old had emulated a 21 year old record of becoming the youngest to make it that far at a Grand Slam.

Interestingly, her opening round win over Daria Kasatkina was her first main draw victory of the season and now she has doubled her count. The question is if Kostyuk can even come close to causing the biggest upset of her tennis career.

Osaka v Kostyuk Prediction & Tip

Osaka is a rather short 1/7 to win this encounter which isn’t much of a surprise given how well she has played since the start of the Cincinnati Open. There has been a lot of off-court focus on Osaka but she has not let that affect her and she should come through. What will be interesting to see is if she can adapt to her opponent’s style – which would be bit of an unknown – quickly enough.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
