Daniil Medvedev v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Three previous matches between these two players have led to a 2-1 scoreline in favour of Medvedev. In their first meeting at Nice in 2015, Tiafoe had beaten Medvedev in the qualifying rounds but since then the Russian has won two matches including a first round encounter at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Clinical Medvedev Yet to Drop a Set

On paper, the 2019 US Open finalist Medvedev is yet to play a noteworthy opponent but the other side of the story is he has made them look ordinary. The three matches he has played so far, Medvedev has won all three without dropping a single set – one of only three players in the tournament so far to do so.

His latest victim was his third round opponent, wild-card JJ Wolf, against whom he won 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to make it to the round of 16. Wolf looks like an exciting prospect and did his bit to put up a fight but still lasted just an hour and 48 minutes, having been broken seven times in the match.

Medvedev hit 33 winners, to Wolf’s 29 in the match but where he scored over his American opponent was his accuracy – he won 80% of his points on first serve and hit just 10 unforced errors across those three sets.

This victory came on the back of crushing wins over Federico Delbonis and Chris O’Connell, and he will now look to take that step closer to what he had done last season here.

Tiafoe Makes Just His Second Fourth Round

The American has been tipped to be one of the next-gen stars for a while but his form hasn’t quite been up to the scratch in recent times.

There was a third round appearance at Wimbledon in 2018 but it wasn’t till he made it to the quarterfinal at the Australian Open last year and followed it up with another appearance at the last eight stage at the Miami Masters that things appeared to brighten for Tiafoe.

The rest of 2019, however, didn’t go as planned either, with regular losses in the first two rounds of Grand Slams and Masters, including a second round defeat at the US Open last year.

With an opening round loss at the Australian Open – to Medvedev – and another in the first round at the Cincinnati Open last week, things looked like they were slipping away for him. This is why this run to the fourth round which has seen him beat Andreas Seppi, John Millman and Marton Fucsovics, should play a huge role in his career going forward.

Medvedev v Tiafoe Prediction & Tip

Medvedev to prove too powerful for Tiafoe with the Russian starting off a whopping 1/14 to win this. Another straight-set win looks to be in the offing.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
