Jennifer Brady v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

There have been two matches played between Brady and Putintseva before this and both of them won by the latter. Putintseva registered a 6-4, 6-3 win on the clay court of the French Open in 2018 in their first encounter before crushing Brady in another straight-setter at the Washington Open that year.

A string of poor performances from Brady that year meant she ended the season ranked 115th. Now she is on the verge of breaking into the top 30 for the first time in her career.

Brady’s High Level Play Takes Another High-Profile Victim

Brady’s taking no prisoners this year and former US Open winner Angelique Kerber was the latest in line of the many victims who have fallen by the wayside at her hands this season. It’s a list which has seen many a high-profile players go down to the American, starting from the very beginning of this season.

A player who first shone through with a fourth round appearance at the 2017 Australian Open followed it up with another similar showing at that’s season’s US Open. Since then, however, she hadn’t quite delivered on that early promise, not until this year.

At the Australian Open she might have fallen in round one, but a quarterfinal at the Brisbane International before that and a semifinal at the Dubai Open after, made it a wonderful start to the year. Not to mention, both times she was a qualifier.

And once the season resumed, Brady ran away to her first ever WTA title win, which included five, pumelling, straight-set victories. In this tournament at the Flushing Meadows, Brady might not have played an opponent of note before the Kerber match but nothing takes away from her performance.

In the second set of their fourth round match, Kerber became the first played to take four games off Brady in a set before going down 6-1, 6-4. She needed just 88 minutes to get there and while she was broken once in the second set, Brady retaliated with one of her own to forge an insurmountable lead.

Putintseva Makes Her First US Open Quarterfinal

Brady might not have been a household name before this tournament but her performances in the lead-up to the US Open this year suggested this could be her breakthrough showing. Unlike in case of Putintseva, whose quarterfinal appearance here has been bit more of a bolt from the blue.

In none of the tournaments played by Putintseva this season has she managed to win three in a row in the main draw – she went four in a row in Brisbane including the qualifiers – and here, at the US Open, out of nowhere the Kazakh has managed to emulate her best Grand Slam showing.

A former French Open quarterfinalist, having made it there in 2016 and 2018, Putintseva defeated the eighth seeded Petra Martic in the fourth round in three sets to make it to the last eight.

And while she might have been helped a tad by the draw, a young wild-card in her first round, a comeback player with a protected ranking in the second and then at a time when she could have played Marketa Vondrousova in the third, Aliaksandra Sasnovich dumped her out.

Putintseva’s real challenge comes now despite having beaten Brady twice before – that was a different Brady altogether. However, at times, it’s results like those which count for a lot in matches like these which could be decided by a player’s confidence.

Brady v Putintseva Prediction & Tip

Brady will be nothing but an overwhelming favourite in this one and while Putintseva has done extremely well to defy the odds and get to the last-eight, we are looking at another, a fifth successive straight-set win for the American.

Tip: Brady to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
