Fabio Fognini v Marc-Andrea Hüsler Head to Head

The world number 12 Fognini has never played Husler before this in any competitive tennis.

Six Months Since Fognini’s Last Match

While most of the top players in the world were involved in some or the other form of competitive tennis, Fognini hasn’t lifted his tennis racquet competitively for more than six months. That’s correct, the last time he played was in March when he turned out for Italy in a Davis Cup singles match and easily won.

Fognini didn’t take part in any exhibition competitions, nor did he start off at any of the hard court tournaments which were played in August, including the US Open. And while some of those who missed out on the hard court season, featured in Challengers in Europe, like Stan Wawrinka, Fognini was away.

He now plays his first match, after getting an opening round bye in this tournament, and will hope to add to his excellent 34-18 win-loss record on clay over the last two years. A Monte-Carlo Masters winner last year with wins over Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric and Rafael Nadal, Fognini might be rusty but confident.

Hüsler Kick-Starts the Season Late

It’s an interesting contrast between Fognini and his opponent, Marc-Andrea Hüsler. Now obviously, Hüsler is ranked 303rd in the world, far away from his opponent’s ranking but more vitally he didn’t play a single at any level till the start of the pandemic.

It was during the pandemic break, Hüsler finally kick-started his season with an exhibition tournament by the name of the Swiss Masters, which he went on to win. He made it two in two with the Tie-Break Cup victory before featuring in his first Challenger-level competition of the season.

He made it through the qualifiers but in the main draw first round there, before winning a couple of qualifying rounds here in Kitzbuhel to make it to the main draw. Going in at odds of 7/5 in his opener against Emil Ruusuvuori, Hüsler then proceeded to lose the first set before coming back to win in three and seal a second round berth.

Fognini v Hüsler Prediction & Tip

A potentially one-sided match could turn interesting because of Fognini’s prolonged absence and Hüsler’s form. Good to look at the games market here.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
