Diego Schwartzman v Laslo Djere Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between Schwartzman and Djere, with the Argentine having both times so far. Their first match came at the Cincinnati Masters last season where Schwartzman was a straight-set winner before making it 2-0 just prior to the pandemic lockdown at Cordoba. He was taken to three sets in that semifinal before winning and making the title-decider.

Schwartzman Pushed to Third Set

It took Schwartzman bit of an effort to get there but he did so in the end. Playing his first match on clay since the Buenos Aires Open earlier in mid-February, Schwartzman defeated local lad Sebastian Ofner 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to make it to the quarterfinal. He had a first round bye before this.

It’s not the been the best of the returns for Schwartzman since the resumption of tennis; he made it as far as the second round at the Cincinnati Open and then lost a tough five-setter in the opening round of the US Open.

Which is why it was more a matter of slowly getting back into rhythm as he builds into the year’s third and final Grand Slam; the French Open on clay. Which is further why while getting stretched to three sets might not be the easiest way to get through against a low-ranked wild-card, the time on court would help.

A match-up against Djere on clay wouldn’t be an easy one by any stretch but Schwartzman will slowly get there on a surface he likes, having won two ATP titles and one Challenger Tour Finals on it.

Djere Relief at Returning Back to Form

Djere’s win at the Rio Open and a few decent performances after that last year took him to 27th in the world but his later-season form was abysmal. And with just a Cordoba semifinal to show for this season, Djere has plumetted to 81st in the ranking.

He did put up a decent showing during the pandemic, winning seven of his nine matches at the Eastern European Championships on clay but put on the hard courts of the Western & Southern Open and the US Open, he looked like a fish out of water and lost the openers at both.

Now back on clay, a surface he prefers as well, much like his opponent, Djere has shown signs of the old spark. He needed a couple of qualifying wins to make it to the main draw but from there on wins over Albert Ramos Vinolas and Jannik Sinner would have pleased him, and relieved him no ends.

Schwartzman, who is the second seed here, will be another challenge to that list of tough opponents but like Djere showed at the Cordoba Open semifinal earlier this year, he will have an extra gear.

Schwartzman v Djere Prediction & Tip

Djere will look to take the attack to Schwartzman but the Argentine should still come through. May be in three sets.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
