Angelique Kerber v Katerina Siniakova Head to Head

This will be the fourth time Kerber and Siniakova will be facing off in a competitive encounter. Kerber leads 3-0, having beaten her opponent once apiece on all three surfaces, grass, hard and clay. It was on clay that Siniakova won her only set against Kerber, in their latest meeting that came at the 2017 Madrid Open.

Back to Back Fourth Round Ousters for Kerber

Kerber is a former world number one and a three-time Grand Slam winner but on clay, it’s not been the same for her. Her best showing at Roland-Garros has been a couple of quarterfinal appearances, underlining her issues with clay.

And it’s not that her discomfiture has been restricted to the French Open alone. Kerber has never made it past the quarterfinal at the Madrid Open and has been a semifinalist at here at Rome just one – under-par for a player of her calibre.

What will particularly worry Kerber is her form on any court this year. She exited the Brisbane International in the very first round and then was sent packing in the second round at Adelaide.

While Kerber made it to the fourth round at Australian Open, lack of any game time between the year’s first Grand Slam and US Open meant another fourth round exit at Flushing Meadows wasn’t that much of a surprise.

Now, without too much of time on clay having played none on it this season and only four last year, Kerber will have her back to the wall going into this opening encounter.

Siniakova on a Four-Match Losing Streak

If you count the Moravia Open which was one of the few exhibition tournaments hosted in Czech Republic, Siniakova has now lost five matches her last six she has played. That includes three successive opening round exits since she returned to the WTA level following the resumption of the tennis season.

At the Lexington Open, Siniakova was sent packing by Tamara Zidansek, then lost to Kirsten Flipkens in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open before Kaia Kanepi crushed her 6-1, 6-2 in the US Open first round.

One of two WTA titles for Siniakova have come on clay, but things haven’t looked as rosy since for her on that surface – 10-8 in 2018 and 11-7 in 2019 for the Czech player.

Can she use the experience of having played a few exhibition competitions on clay this season against an opponent who will be clay-rusty here.

Kerber v Siniakova Prediction & Tip

This should be a straightforward win for Kerber, even a straight-set victory despite the obvious disadvantage of not having played any match on clay.

Tip: Kerber to win: 4/11 (bet365)
