Simona Halep v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head

Halep and Yastremska have previously never played a match against each other.

Halep 6-0 on Clay This Year

The Romanian top seed hadn’t played a single match on clay before the tour was suspended because of the pandemic but has since returned and featured in six matches, all of which have come on red dirt.

And she has won them all.

It started with the Prague Open where Halep was tested in the first two rounds, getting stretched to three sets by Polona Hercog and Barbora Krejcicova but from there on it’s been reasonably plain sailing for her. Even in the final there, Elise Mertens was brushed aside in straight sets, with Halep winning 6-2, 7-5.

Halep, who has been a two-time runner-up at Rome – in 2017 and 2018 – started her Italian Open campaign this year with a 6-3, 6-4 drubbing of Jasmine Paolini in the second round. Jasmine broke her early in the first set but Halep took advantage of her opponent’s underwhelming second serve and kept knocking points off it.

The world number two broke back twice and sealed the first set thereafter but if she thoughts things were going to get any easier in the second set Halep was mistaken. She was broken first again and this was followed by five breaks of serve – three apiece – before Halep finally managed to hold serve.

Halep finished off the match soon after with another break of serve, her eighth of the match to proceed into the third round. She will need to play a lot better against Yastremska though.

Yastremska in the Danger Zone Again

Since making it to the final at the Adelaide International earlier this year, the world number 29 Yastremska has not had a tournament in which she has won more than two matches in a row. In fact, there have been four WTA competitions including here in Rome that Yastremska has clinched her first two rounds and then lost in the third.

So much so, it might have caused a split between her and her coach, Sasha Bajin, with Yastremska having announced she would be appointing a new coach by November.

Whether it affects her too much in this tournament remains to be seen but for now, Yastremska has warded off two tough opponents to make it to the third. In her opener, she overcame Camila Giorgi, a player who had earlier beaten her in Palermo before taking on Amanda Anisimova in the second round.

Anisimova grabbed the first set and things could gone either way in the second set when Yastremska was taken to a tie-breaker but the Ukrainian showed great mental strength in getting past the American in three.

It’s that time of the tournament now which Yastremska has struggled to get past in recent times. Making it tougher for her is the opponent, who is on a six-match winning streak on clay. Can she turn things around at this stage?

Halep v Yastremska Prediction & Tip

Halep is 2/7 to win this but it’s might not remain a straightforward encounter. We are still backing Halep to find the mental reserves needed in this one but it could last a bit of time.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
