Diego Schwartzman v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

This will be the second time that the pair will meet each other in a competitive match. In their only prior meeting, it was the Polish who won a tight three-setter. That match was played at the ATP Cup earlier this year on hard courts.

Schwartzman Hit by Inconsistency Since Resumption

The Argentine has been one of those players whose form has suffered due to the season suspension. The 28-year-old started the season brightly at the ATP Cup and followed it up with some impressive runs. He reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open and lost to Novak Djokovic in the end. Next up were a couple of home tournaments in Cordoba and Buenos Aires.

Continuing the good form, Schwartzman made it to the final at Cordoba and lost to Christian Garin in a heartbreaking encounter where he was a setup. At Buenos Aires, he had to retire in the semi-finals due to a leg injury. But his form has not been the same since the season resumed.

The Argentine lost in the second round at the Cincinnati Open and at Kitzbuhel, whereas he suffered a shock first-round loss in the US Open to Cameron Norrie in a gruelling five-setter.

But now he would be looking to repeat his last year’s excellent run here in Rome where he reached the semi-finals. He loves playing on the clay and a deep run this week will set him up nicely for the French Open.

Hurkacz Hasn’t Won Two Matches in a Row

If his opponent’s form has been patchy since the season resumed, the Polish has been struggling with the same for the best part of this season. Hurkacz started the season really impressively by winning all three of his matches at the ATP Cup.

He followed it up with a semi-final run at Auckland. At that point, it looked like that the 23-year-old would really kick on this year and potentially break into the top 20.

But he has never quite found the level of consistency required post that to make that step up. If we discount the exhibition events during the suspension period, Hurkacz had played at seven tournaments since Auckland and has failed to win more than one main draw match at any of them.

This run was ended when he won here in Rome in the second round against Alexander Rublev.

That really must have been a confidence-boosting upset for Hurkacz considering Rublev had just been to the quarter-finals at the US Open and was in excellent form. Hopefully, for the Polish youngster, that win will serve as a springboard for him to achieve more consistency and soon achieve his career-best ranking.

He is currently ranked 31 in the world, just three short of his best ever at 28.

Diego Schwartzman v Hubert Hurkacz Prediction & Tip

The Argentine starts this match as the clear favourite. He is a clay-court specialist and despite indifferent results, his form is improving with every match he plays. Hurkacz on the other hand shocked everyone with the surprise win over Rublev. But inconsistency has been a problem for him all season and unfortunately for him, his opponent will be too strong on this surface.

Tip: Schwartzman to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
