Back-To-Back Surprise Wins For Unknown Musetti

Little known 18-year-old Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti came to the Italian Open having played only one ATP match in his career, in Dubai, and yet to register a first win on the tour.

Up against 2015 French Open champion and three-time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka, Musetti showed no sign of nerves taking the first set 6-0 against all expectations. With a display of breathtaking shots and a beautiful single handed backhand, the world number 249 prevailed in straight sets 6-0, 7-6.

Next step was another former top five player in the world and 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori, who was subject to much of the same treatment by Musetti. Once again, he showed no signs of being the underdog or lesser experienced of the two, with exciting strokeplay and closing out crucial points with finesse.

In a crowd of players coined as the ‘Next Gen’, Musetti may well be the latest addition to watch out for. With an opponent less established than those in his previous two rounds, the young Italian is in with a great shot at a first ever Masters 1000 quarter-final within days of winning his first ever ATP match.

Koepfer in Good Nick at Italian Open

26-year-old German Dominik Koepfer has already played five matches at the Italian Open this time around. His path towards a first main draw appearance at the Masters 1000 involved winning three qualifiers, each in three sets, against the likes of Gilles Simon and Mikhail Kukushkin.

US based Koepfer enjoyed a career-best season in 2019, where he won his first title at the ATP Challenger on grass, and won his first major match at Wimbledon soon thereafter. He followed this with a good run at the 2019 US Open where he reached the fourth round as a qualifier, defeating Reilly Opelka and Nikoloz Basilashvili along the way before losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev in four sets.

Recently having broken into the top 100 of the rankings, the German put up a strong display in the opener here to defeat US Open quarter-finalist from last week, Aussie Alex de Minaur and followed with an even more convincing win against top ten ranked French veteran Gael Monfils.

Musetti v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

An unexpected but interesting pre-quarter final match on the cards with two players in good form. While it is hard to pick a winner, teenager Musetti is playing some of the most fearless tennis of the tournament and will in all likelihood continue to do so.

Expect a tight contest, with Musetti prevailing in a decider.

Tip: Musetti to win in three sets: 10/3 (bet365)
