Polona Hercog v Alize Cornet Head to Head

The pair have met each other six times in their career so far with their first-ever meeting back in 2006.

The Frenchwoman leads the tally with five wins with the Slovenian only winning once. The only time Hercog won was back in 2010 on the clay courts of Acapulco. Their most recent meeting was two years ago at Charleston where Cornet won in straight sets.

Heartbreaking Loss for Hercog in Rome

After a slow start to the post lockdown season, the 29-year-old Slovenian has looked really impressive in the last few weeks. She reached the quarter-finals at Istanbul before reaching the round of 16 in Rome.

One more win for her would have been her first-ever quarter-final appearance at a Premier event. She was looking good against Marketa Vondrousova after winning the first set 6-1. But she eventually went down in a third set tie break.

But Hercog did beat two players higher in the rankings than her last week, one of which was Kiki Bertens and that should give her some confidence going into this encounter.

The Slovenian has a really good record on the clay courts and will be looking to once again go deep in Strasbourg as well. The season so far for Hercog has been a disappointing one where she lost in early rounds at the start of the season. In fact after her first-round win at the Australian Open, she had not won a single main draw match in her next four tournaments.

Cornet Took a Week off After the US Open

For a clay-court specialist, the Frenchwoman had a surprisingly good run on the hard courts post the season resumed. She reached the third round at Cincinnati before making it to the round of 16 at the US Open.

Although Madison Keys’ retirement from the third round did help her cause. Due to a longer than expected run on the hard courts, the 30-year-old decided to take a week off after the Flushing Meadows.

She will be looking to get some vital practice on her favourite surface this week before her home Grand Slam. Even though many feel that her best days are past her considering the last of her six WTA titles came more than two years ago. Cornet has struggled with injuries in the past couple of years and hasn’t made it past the opening round at any of her past four Grand Slam.

But a prolonged break midway through this season should work in her favour. The former world number 11 looks re-energised and refreshed now.

Polona Hercog v Alize Cornet Prediction & Tip

Hercog starts the match as the favourite because she has played more matches on clay then Cornet. This will be the Slovenian’s ninth match on clay since the season resumed compared to the first of Cornet.

Tip: Hercog to win: 8/13 (bet365)
