Andrey Rublev v Tommy Paul Head to Head

This is the second meeting between both players on the tour. Their only previous meeting was at the Citi Open in Washington D.C., in 2019, which Rublev won in straight sets.

Rublev Returns to Turnaround Venue of 2019

After a year full of injuries,  Andrey Rublev returned to the tour in the latter part of 2019. The Russian performed well to win the Kremlin Cup, as well as register wins against the best on the tour such as Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem and others.

Incidentally, the Hamburg Open in July 2019 was one of the big turnaround events of Rublev’s career. He defeated Dominic Theim in the quarters and was a losing finalist to Nikoloz Basilashvili here last year.

2020 got off to a perfect start for Rublev, who won the Qatar Open and Adelaide International in early-mid January.  He broke into the top 20 of the ATP rankings, and arrived in Melbourne for the Australian Open high on confidence.

A fourth round loss to Alexander Zverev made for a disappointing exit, but he followed it with quarter-final losses at both Rotterdam and Dubai ATP 500s, before the season closed down for the pandemic.

After a disappointing early loss to Dan Evans at the Western & Southern Open, Rublev looked in very good form at the US Open. He was  a quarter-finalist and lost to compatriot Daniil Medvedev in three tight sets, after four convincing wins including a victory against Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Rublev’s return to clay has been sub-optimal thus far with a second round loss to Hubert Hurkacz at Rome last week, but a good win against Tennys Sandgren in the opener here has hopefully set him for another good Hamburg run.

Paul Confident After Anderson Win

23-year-old American Tommy Paul spent most of the last few seasons on the ATP Challenger circuit and won three titles in 2019 to break into the top 100 of the ATP rankings.

On the main tour, he  made an encouraging start to his 2020 season in which he reached his maiden ATP semifinal at the Adelaide International, where he beat seasoned campaigners such as Aljaz Bedene, Pablo Cuevas, and Albert Ramos Vinolas en route.

Paul had never won a Grand Slam match in his career prior to this year’s Australian Open, but that all changed as he translated his form from Adelaide to Melbourne. He shocked Leonard Mayer in the first round to pick up his first Grand Slam main draw win, and then in somewhat inspiring fashion he downed Grigor Dimitrov in a five-set tussle.

His post pandemic form has been less impressive, with early defeats at the Western & Southern Open, the US Open and the Italian Open last week. Playing Dimitrov again, this time at the US Open, the Bulgarian ensured that there was no repeat of Melbourne in New York.

Paul looked in good form in the first round here in Hamburg with a deciding set victory against two time Grand Slam finalist Kevin Anderson.

The American will be looking to sharpen his match practice and confidence going into the French Open next week.

Rublev v Paul Prediction and Tip

An interesting match between two young prospects lies in store for us. Rublev starts as the strong favorite and although Paul has been in good form himself, expect the Russian to win in two comfortable sets.

Tip: Rublev to win in two sets: 8/15 (bet365)
