2019 was a positive year for young and rising Next Gen Frenchman Ugo Humbert, who made the fourth round at Wimbledon and moved up the rankings from outside the top 100 to number 57 at year-end.
The new decade got off to an even better start for Humbert, who looked sharp all week at the ASB Classic in Auckland, and an unexpected finalist Humbert was in an upbeat frame of mind going into the final as he claimed his first ATP title defeating French veteran Benoit Paire
Expected to perform well at the Australian Open, the young Frenchman came up against Aussie John Millman in the opener and succumbed in a four-setter. As the season shut down for the pandemic, Humbert had moved up to number 43 in the world rankings and was looking to return to his early season form upon the return of the tour.
Humbert did not have the best return to the season with early losses at both the Western & Southern Open and the US Open. However, he has looked good on clay, defeating Kevin Anderson and Fabio Fognini en route the quarter-finals at the Rome Masters last week.
He topped those victories with a first ever top ten victory defeating Daniil Medvedev in the first round in straight sets here at Hamburg, and will be looking for a deep run here, going into the French Open.

Experienced Vesely Starts as Underdog
2020 has been an up and down year for Jiri Vesely. The Czech returned to an ATP final this January at the Maharashtra Open after five years. He went on to defeat Egor Gerasimov and win the title in three sets.
An unimpressive, shorter season followed where he lost early on in the February tournaments and proceeded to play on the Challenger Tour as well.
The return of the tour did not change his fortunes, as he lost out early at the US Open but Vesely did well to qualify for the Hamburg Open here and looked in good touch in the opener against Gilles Simon. The Czech will be hoping to continue his run this week and get match practice and confidence ahead of the French Open.
