Jan-Lennard Struff v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

This will be only the second meeting between the pair. The only previous occasion on which the two players met was last year in Antwerp. Tiafoe won in straight sets that time on the hard courts.

Stuff Looking to Replicate Last Year’s Run at Roland Garros

The German had an impressive run at the French Open last year. He reached the fourth round and beat a much higher ranked Borna Coric in a thrilling five-setter on the way. He lost to Novak Djokovic eventually but played some scintillating tennis that week. Now he is back in Paris once again and will be looking to repeat the run he had last year.

Although his form going into this week hasn’t been the best. Struff has lost his last three matches, two of which have been in the opening rounds at Rome and Hamburg.

Even though he did play a lot of matches on the clay courts during the season suspension, he looked off-colour and off the pace during those two matches. So it will be crucial for him to find his rhythm quickly if he wants to repeat the kind of run he had last year.

On the hard courts, the story was different for the world number 32. He won five out of the seven matches played in Cincinnati and the US Open but lost to Djokovic on both the occasions.

So he will be glad to be on the other side of the draw to the Serbian in Paris.

Tiafoe Looked His Old Self at the US Open

A couple of months in the last season, the American was ranked 29 in the world and had just come off a quarter-final run at the Australian Open.

The Next Gen star was tipped to break into the top 20 when he reached the last eight in Miami a couple of months later. But things took a sharp downward turn for Tiafoe since then.

From that point onward, the 22-year-old crashed out in the opening two rounds in 13 events last season. Apart from his semi-final run at the Next Gen ATP Finals, he did not come up with any consistent runs either.

The same pattern continued this year as well he crashed out in the opening round in the first three tournaments he played in. He did go back to playing a few Challenger EVents to boost his confidence. But once again he was below his best before the season came to a halt.

Tiafoe lost in the first round against Andy Murray in the first match after the season resumed. And not many were counting on him going into New York.

But the second-round win against John Millman seemed like a turning point for the American. He won a thrilling five-setter after being down two sets to one.

He then breezed past Marton Fucsovic in the third round before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the fourth. His body language was much more positive in New York and he played with a lot of confidence. Even though he lost in the second round at the Forli Challenger, he will be feeling much better about himself going into this match.

Jan-Lennard Struff v Frances Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Despite the difference in rankings, this could be a tight contest. Struff is on a three-match losing run whereas Tiafoe looked really sharp at the US Open. The German should progress eventually but this match will likely the distance.

Tip: Five sets in the match: 5/2 (bet365)
