Dayana Yastremska v Daria Gavrilova Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between Yastremska and Gavrilova. In their first, which came at the 2019 Indian Wells Open, Gavrilova had needed three sets to defeat Yastremska and advance to the second round.

Yastremska in Her Second French Open

Ukraine’s Yastremska has played in just one previous edition of Roland-Garros and she went out crashing in the first round in 2019. That culminated a somewhat curious performance on clay from Yastremska, who had also lost in the first round of three other tournaments on clay in 2019 but sandwiched those with a performance to remember at Strasbbourg.

She defeated the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Caroline Garcia to win her third WTA title overall and first on clay.

And it’s not like clay isn’t a preferred surface for Yastremska, who has three lower-level titles on the surface as well, and possesses an overall 54-26 record on red dirt – across all tiers of competition.

Yastremska has played in two tournaments on clay since the return from pandemic. At the first in Palermo, Yastremska came through and reached the quarterfinals before going down to Camila Giorgi. Then at Rome she avenged that defeat and overcame Amanda Anisimova before losing to the eventual winner Simona Halep.

Gavrilova on a Protected Ranking

We spoke of Gavrilova’s last meeting at the Indian Wells Open last year where she defeated the Ukrainian in the opener. She won another round there before going out in the third. Those two wins formed a part of a rare set of victories for Gavrilova all year, as she struggled with injury issues, notching up just seven wins and 20 defeats in all of 2019.

She last played at the US Open before opting out and made a return to the circuit only in September this year, featuring in the Cagnes-Sur-Mer ITF competition as a qualifier. Gavrilova won a couple of qualifiers to make it to the main draw where she defeated Greet Minnen and Clara Burel to enter the last-eight stage before losing out.

A former world number 20, at her best, Gavrilova has notched up wins against the likes of Maria Sharapova, Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova in her career. The question is whether she is at her best at the moment, which doesn’t seem likely. Her performance at the ITF tournament, however, suggests she is not too far away from challenging some of the top players in the world.

Yastremska v Gavrilova Prediction and Tip

Yastremska is 1/5 to win this and there cannot be too many doubts she is the favourite here but we won’t discount Gavrilova completely here. If she gets an inch in the form of a loose game from her opponent, trust her to convert that to at least a set win.

Tip: Gavrilova to win a set – Yes: 5/4 (bet365)
