Bouchard Showing Signs of Old Sparkle

From a season low of 329th on the WTA rankings charts, Bouchard has slowly moved up to 168th in the world. This has been thanks to her recent form, especially on clay, so much so that the French Open organisers awarded her a wildcard. It could also be to do with the fact she has been a semifinalist at Roland-Garros, but that was way back in 2014 when Bouchard was more known for her tennis.

Things look to be settling back for Bouchard, who made a conscious decision not to play on the hard courts of USA in August – instead focussing on clay and Europe. She started off with at the WTA Prague where she reached the quarterfinal before falling in her opener at the Prague Open only weeks later.

Shrugging that loss off, Bouchard then featured in the qualifiers at the Istanbul Cup and went on to reaching within three points of winning the title! In the end, Bouchard lost a tight three-setter to Patricia Tig in the final but not before she had improved to 168th in the world.

A win here will take her to her best Grand Slam performance since the 2019 Australian Open and a third round appearance would mean it would be the first time she gets there since January 2017. She should start off with a lot of confidence for sure.

Kalinskaya Struggles to Push On

Russian Kalinskaya shot to fame last season with her solid showing at the US Open but she seems to have found a roadblock at around her current ranking of 108th. Her season-high last year was 96th in the world, she ended the season at 105th and this year her ranking has fluctuated between 104th and 117th.

This has been down to her efforts to qualification to the main draws of tournaments but inability to get on further in those competitions.

Since the return from the pandemic, Kalinskaya has played in the qualifiers at the Lexington Open, Cincinnati Open and Italian Open. At the first two, she made the main draw, only to lose in the first round and at Rome, she failed to navigate through those qualifiers.

Kalinskaya also featured in the US Open where she made the second round. Unfortunately for her, that has been her best showing in any tournament all of 2020.

She replaced her friend Anastasia Potapova in the main draw here, and while Kalinskaya will look to come out fighting as always, Bouchard’s form makes her a very, very tough opponent.

Bouchard v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Despite Bouchard being ranked around 60 places behind Kalinskaya, she starts off a heavy favourite here, 2/5 to win this. Might see Kalinskaya put up a fight but we expect the Canadian to go through here.

Tip: Bouchard to win: 2/5 (bet365)
