Kvitova Goes Past Dodin

On paper it was a straight-set win for Petra Kvitova, beating Oceane Dodin in her opening round. That, however, wasn’t quite the case as Dodin looked like she was in the set both times.

Both players held their serve in the first set till the seventh game, but more vitally Kvitova was unable to find a way through her opponent and get herself even a break-point. That happened in the eighth game of the set, and off the second Kvitova was able to get the break before serving out the set.

It got tougher in the second. Kvitova got an early break but it looked like a case of early complacency which allowed Dodin to break back and from there on, play went on without a break of serve.

At 4-4, Dodin saved a break point but failed to do so at 5-5 before Kvitova served out for the match.

Kvitova looked to have done most things right on her part, serving five aces, hitting 29 winners to 14 unforced errors and in general possessing a better first serve percentage. She will hope to maintain the same going into this second round match, as she aims to make it to her first quarterfinal at Roland-Garros since 2012.

Paolini Wins Battle of the 90s

It was a match between two players ranked in the 90s, Jasmine Paolini and Aliona Bolsova but it was anything but a close encounter. Paolini won 6-4, 6-3, needing just an hour and 14 minutes on court, breaking her opponent a total of five times in the match.

The striking difference between the two players came on their first serves. While both had a similar percentage of first serves in (72% v 75%), Paolini won 61% of the points to her opponent’s 48.

That win took Paolini to her first ever second round match in a Grand Slam, following on from three previous opening ousters, and 11 exits from qualifiers.

Interestingly, Paolini has already made it to the second round of three other events on clay before Roland-Garros; getting there at her home tournament in Palermo, and then at Istanbul and Rome – the big question is if she can come close to pushing her better-ranked opponent here.

Kvitova v Paolini Prediction and Tip

A 1/10 offer for the Kvitova win is far too short to be considered, we think it could get a lot closer than that and a games handicap looks a better bet here.

Tip: Games Handicap Paolini +6.5: 4/6 (bet365)
