Gombos Shocked Coric in Opener

The odds were stacked against the Slovakian going into the first round match. Coric was a quarter-finalist from New York and loves playing on the clay courts.

But he produced a brave display of grit and determination to prevail over his much-fancied opponent. The win is even more considering the fact that Coric had a better first and second serve rate as well as hit more aces that Gombos.

But the 30-year-old stuck to the task and returned excellently. He played the big points well and broke his opponent at the crucial times. He broke Coric when the score was 4-3 in the Slovak’s favour in the third and fourth sets. And that allowed little chance for the Croatian to come back into the match.

This is the first time that Gombos is playing at the main draw of the French Open having failed to make it to the main draw on the previous six consecutive occasions. And now he is set to enter the top 100 no matter what happens in the second round.

Rodionov Come Back from Two Sets Down

If Gombos’ opening win was impressive, the 21-year old Rodionov’s match was the stuff of dreams.

He was playing against an opponent who was 105 ranks higher than him in Jeremy Chardy and fell two sets down, and had a match point against him in the third set tie break. But Rodionov turned that match around and not only saved the third set but took the game to the distance.

In the fifth set again he faced a match point but managed to win it 10-8 to seal a memorable win. This was also his first-ever ATP tour win after six consecutive losses prior to that.

It will be interesting to see if, after the euphoria of such a big win, he can physically and mentally recover in time to beat another higher-ranked opponent.

Norbert Gombos v Jurij Rodionov Prediction and Tip

The result that Rodionov achieved will really give him a huge confidence boost. But Gombos will still start the match as the favourite. He played with a lot of authority in the first match and should be able to see off the Austrian to progress further.

Tip: Gombos to win: 4/9 (bet365)
