Kenin Hoping to Add Consistency

She is an Australian Open winner but at the same time, Sofia Kenin has been struggling to get a move on since. Sure, she made it to the fourth round at the US Open but Kenin would have expected more out of her own self, having earlier crashed out in the Cincinnati Open opener as well.

And then came her second round at the Italian Open. Having gotten a bye in the first round, Kenin knew she was up against a tricky opponent in the form of Victoria Azarenka but little did she know what was to transpire ahead.

A ravaging Azarenka blasted past Kenin, double-bagelling her in the process and sending the American back to the drawing board. Because after a defeat like that, there is always a chance of a major loss of confidence and Kenin would be doing well to overcome the mental scars of that loss.

The other tough part of Kenin coming into this match is the conditions will be a far cry from what she would have faced anywhere else. Now while that’s the case for everyone, it becomes doubly difficult for Kenin coming in from her only clay court match she has played this season having ended in a 6-0, 6-0 loss.

Samsonova Inching up to Main Draws These Days

With a career-best ranking of 114th in the world, it’s easy to estimate Samsonova hasn’t won too many matches on the tour level. That was a ranking she got earlier this year, in February, just before the tour was suspended, having reached the main draw of a Grand Slam for the second time in her career – following on from the 2019 French Open.

Samsonova now has a second appearance at the French Open as she looks to improve upon her tour-level form, having registered just two wins in the main draw this year.

The first came in Brisbane, where as a qualifier she defeated Sloane Stephens in the first round before going down to Petra Kvitova. More recently Samsonova needed three tough qualifiers to get to the main draw of the Palermo Open – the first tennis tournament after the pandemic break – and then defeated Kirsten Flipkens in the opener to enter round two.

She went down fighting to Perta Martic and will hope she can show that kind of a fight in her opener here.

Kenin v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Kenin’s more recent issues do not take away from the fact she has had very little issues disposing off the lower-ranked players early in the tournaments. And which is why she should start a heavy favourite here, with very little risk of an upset. Whether she can win it in straight sets remains a question-mark though.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
