Alexander Bublik v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 23-year-old from Kazakhstan, and the Italian, who is two years older.

Bublik Surprise Winner over Monfils

Bublik pulled off a major surprise by beating Gael Monfils, the number eight seed and local favourite in their first round match on Monday to reach the second round for the second successive year at Roland Garros.

It was his first ever win over a top ten player, and somewhat surprising for a man whose two ATP finals have been on grass and a hard court.

The Kazakh actually dropped his first service game of the match, but when Monfils lost his successive games, Bublik was able to take an early lead. The second set swayed first one way and then the other, and neither man was able to hold their serve at one stage. In the end though, it was Monfils who made the more mistakes, and Bublik forged a two-set lead.

The pattern was repeated in the third set, except that this time it was the Frenchman who forced the decisive break to hit back.

But after the pair swapped service breaks early in the fourth set, any hopes of a French comeback were ended when Monfils dropped his serve again in the eighth game. Bublik took full advantage by serving out for the match to clinch it 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Bublik had earlier reached the quarterfinal of the Hamburg Open as a qualifier, defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the main draw.

Sonego Battles Past Qualifier

Italian clay court specialist Sonego is into the second round of the French Open for the first time, matching his previous best at a Grand Slam event.

Sonego, however, had to battle for the right to face Bublik, after coming from behind to beat the Ecuadorian qualifier Emilio Gomez, a man ranked 156 in the world, in their first-round match.

The first set went to a tie-break, where, with both men struggling with their serve, it was the Italian who cracked first, giving Gomez the early lead.  However, then the qualifier’s form appeared to desert him as he struggled to hold serve, enabling Sonego first to level the match, and then surge ahead, easily clinching the third set 6-1 and it seemed like Sonego was on his way.

However, any hopes that Sonego had of a relatively early end to proceedings were dashed, as the fourth set also went to a tie-break, which Gomes again clinched.

The pair swapped service breaks early in the deciding set, until the decisive moment came when Sonego broke the Ecuadorian serve for one last time, gratefully serving out to love to finally clinch victory. He made it through 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

Bublik v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Bublik will be in confident mood after the biggest win of his career against Monfils, whilst Sonego struggled to beat a qualifier in his first-round match. That gives the man from Kazakhstan a clear edge going into this match, even though Sonego is the slightly higher-ranked of the pair.

Tip: Bublik to win: 8/13 (bet365)
