Dominic Thiem v Jack SockHead to Head

There have been five matches played previously between Thiem and Sock, all between 20014 and 2018 and Thiem is narrowly 3-2 ahead. None of their meetings have come on clay, with Sock beating Thiem on grass at the Boodles exhibition competition in 2014 and then again at the 2016 Paris Masters.

Thiem’s wins over Sock have come at Miami 2015, Indian Wells 2016 and Paris Masters in 2018.

Thiem Has No Issues with the Switch

Since returning from the pandemic break, Thiem played in only two tournaments – at the Cincinnati Masters where he was knocked out in the very first match he played and the US Opn which he went on to win. And at the end of the US Open when players world over scrambled to get that first flight back to Europe to try and get some clay court practice under their belt, Thiem did neither of that.

He returned home after lifting the trophy and hasn’t played since. No Rome Masters, no Hamurg Open or any of the smaller Challengers or anything of that sort.

Which is why there was always that worry when Thiem took to court for his first round match against former US Open champion Marin Cilic, he might be a tad rusty making that switch.

Nothing of that sort. Thiem displayed his class on clay as he tamed the Croat 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and six minutes, breaking his opposite number six times and making a mere 21 unforced errors to his opponent’s 43.

He now takes on an opponent who is ranked outside the top 300 and has made the main draw as a qualifier.

Sock Sends Out Opelka

Thiem’s the world number three, so a straight-set win after having not played a single tournament on clay since return might still be par for the course.

What do you call a player who has been away from the circuit for that long because of injuries that he has fallen to 310th in the world and barely played in any tournament, let alone clay, and yet, come through with a straight-set win in the first round! Brilliant, isn’t it?

That’s what Sock has been. He played in a couple of main draws at New York and Delray Beach, winning one and losing two of the matches, before featuring in a Challenger where he made the final.

On his return, Sock made the second round at the US Open as a wildcard but at the French Open had to play in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw. And he did that dropping just a set before crushing another American Reilly Opelka by a similar scoreline, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

And while Thiem will be a step up as far as the opposition quality is concerned, one can expect Sock to make his place in the second round count with his fighting qualities.

Thiem v Sock Prediction and Tip

If you are expecting Sock to give his fighting best to this match, and we certainly think he would, there is that possibility he might sneak in a set. For something safer, look at the games market.

Tip: Over 29.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
