Sabalenka Overcomes Kasatkina after Bizarre First Set

Following on from her 6-3, 6-1 rout of Jessica Pegula in the first round, Sabalenka was a straight-setter winner in the second round here at the French Open as well, beating Daria Kasatkina of Russia.

The first set, however, was one of the most bizarre ones she would have played in as neither player looked confident on serve.

The first five games, in fact, were all breaks of serve and only one of them even went to deuce! Kasatkina looked to have finally taken control when she held serve in the sixth game of the set, but Sabalenka followed it up with a hold of her own and broke her Russian opponent back to make it 4-4.

Kasatkina had a chance to serve it out when Sabalenka failed to hold serve in the 11th game but by then it ha started looking like serving wasn’t quite an advantage anyway.

The inevitable tie-breaker which followed had its own share of mini-breaks, five of the first six points were all mini-breaks. It was only in the second half of the tie-breaker that both players started holding their services and Sabalenka finally edged ahead 8-6 to pouch the set.

And just like after the storm comes a calm, it turned out to be that way for Sabalenka. She broke Kasatkina thrice, held on to all her serves and pocketed the match 7-6, 6-0!

Jabeur Comes Through in Straight Sets

Nao Hibino had made it to the semifinal at the Strasbourg Open last week and for a moment it looked like she would challenge Tunisia’s Jabeur. Jabeur had the early break but Hibino broke back in the seventh game of the first set and then went ahead at 6-5 to serve for the set.

Unfortunately for her, she was broken in the next game and fell 4-7 in the tie-breaker to allow Jabeur to go into the second set with a lot more confidence.

Things looked like they would repeat themselves in the second set when Jabeur again started things off with a break but lost serve soon after. This time around, however, it was Jabeur who got hold of the second break and when it was her turn to serve it out, did so with aplomb and to love.

Jabeur had earlier come back from a set down to beat Zarina Diyas in her opener.

Sabalenka v Jabeur Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka looks like she has found her form back and starts off at 1/2 to win this but Jabeur could make it really tough for her. Neither player has a great record on clay but given Jabeur’s stats at the lower circuit on red dirt, she could carve out something here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
