Tiafoe, Finalist in Parma Challenger event

Having reached the fourth round of his home Grand Slam in New York for the first time, Tiafoe was reasonably confident when he crossed the Atlantic to play in the European clay court events.

He began with a warm-up event on the Challenger tour where he got to the second round in Forli, Italy, but disappointment was in store for him in Paris, where, for the fifth successive year, he was beaten at the first-round stage, this time going down to the German Jan-Lennard Struff in five sets.

Undeterred, he entered another Challenger event on clay, in Parma, Italy, and this time his gamble seems to have paid off, as he has now reached the final, where he will play local favourite Salvatore Caruso, on Sunday. In doing so, he has played himself into form.

If he does win on Sunday, it will be his first victory on the Challenger circuit since winning the Open du Pays d’Aix in France in 2017.

His solitary victory in a senior ATP event came at Delray Beach in 2018.

Moutet’s Paris Hopes Dashed

On the junior tour, Corentin won his first Challenger title when he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of a tournament in Brest in 2017.

But whilst the Greek is now a top-ten player, Corentin has not enjoyed such a steep career trajectory, although he is close to his highest ever world ranking.

The 21-year old has had a mixed few months since lockdown, He reached the third round of the US Open for the first time, beating both Jiri Vesely and Dan Evans in the process, but then failed to get beyond qualifying in Rome.

Nevertheless, he was hoping to do well at his home Grand Slam in Paris, but was beaten in the first round by the Italian Lorenzo Guistino, a man ranked 86 places below him in the world.

That was even more disappointing given that he had reached the third round at Roland Garros last year.

Tiafoe v Moutet Prediction and Tip

Although both experienced disappointment at the French Open, Tiafoe, by getting to the final of the Challenger event in Parma, has played himself into form. He will be hoping to carry over that level of performance into his match with Moutet.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
