Lorenzo Sonego v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the Challenger event in Geneva last year, which was played on clay. Sonego won a hard-fought match 7-5 in the third set.

Sonego Beat Italian Wildcard in Opener

Sonego was given an easy opening match, on paper at least, against his compatriot, Giulio Zeppieri, an 18-year old wildcard ranked 317 in the world.

The first set went by the form book – the teenager held on to his serve in the first game of the match, saving three break points, but his service was always under pressure, and it was no surprise when he went on to drop it twice allowing Sonego to establish the advantage.

When Sonego broke again in the third game of the second set, he would have hoped just to ease to the win.

However, to Zeppieri’s credit, he was able to break back and force a second set tiebreak.

The breaker was close but one break of serve was enough to enable Sonego to seal the victory.

He came into this tournament buoyed by his performance in Paris, where he reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Now he will be hoping to go deep into this event in Sardinia as well.

Pune Winner Vesely Looking for Strong Run Here

Earlier this year, Vesely took advantage of a below strength field to win his second ATP title in Pune, five years after his first success in Auckland.

He has not been able to match that level of success since, and was beaten in the second round of the French Open by Karen Khachanov, keeping up his record of failing to get beyond the second round of any event since lockdown.

However, he got his campaign on Sardinia off to a winning start by beating Kamil Majchrzak of Poland, the world 105, in straight sets.

The first set was relatively comfortable – he broke the Pole’s serve in the opening game of the match and then twice more to wrap it up in half an hour’s play.

However, Majchrzak made him work harder for it in the second set, and broke the Czech’s serve in the third game. However, he could not hold on to the advantage, gave the break back, and then dropped his own serve once more, with Vesely sealing the victory on his first match point.

Sonego v Vesely Prediction and Tip

Sonego will start favourite to win this match by dint of the fact that he is higher ranked, is playing in home conditions, and won their previous match. That, though, went to three sets, and it would be no surprise if the same thing happened again.

Tip: Sonego to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
