Casper Ruud v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between the two players.

Casper Ruud brings a 2-1 head-to-head advantage coming into this match. He won their last head-to-head in a 2019 Braunschweig Challenger, bettering Hanfmann two sets to one. His other victory came in 2018 when he bettered Hanfmann in straight sets in The Braga Challenger.

Hanfmann’s only victory came in the Marburg Challenger in 2017, that straight-sets win coming on a clay court. Additionally, all their head-to-head meetings have been on clay courts as well.

Ruud Hoping to Raise the Seeded Flag High

After Dušan Lajović lost in the second round and Fabio Fognini withdrew from the tournament due to a recent Covid-19 diagnosis, Casper Ruud is now the tournament’s highest-rated player and seed. In fact, his 25th place current ATP ranking is his career-best, and he’ll now be confident of gaining more points from this tournament to even better that ranking.

Many bookmakers now have him as the favorite to win the tournament, and he’ll be hoping to prove his worth when he plays his first match on Thursday.

He’s had a great year so far which has seen him shine in several different tournaments. The Norwegian number one won the Argentina Open in February, made it to the final of the Chile Open, and reached the semi-finals of both the Italian and Hamburg European Open; not too bad for a player who’s still only 21 years old.

Ruud also should have recovered from the woes of his most recent competition, the French Open, a competition that he’d have hoped to go further than the third round; but any player would take heart in losing to Dominic Thiem, the Prince of Clay.

Speaking of clay, his statistics on the surface are also impressive. He has a 140-76 career record, and a superb 17-5 record in 2020 which translates to a 77% win rate. When he takes to the court on Thursday against Yannick Hanfmann, he should be more than confident of making that 18-5 for the year

Hanfmann Looking to Cause Another Seeded Upset

With only three seeds left in the competition from an original 8(two of whom are yet to play a match), Hanfmann will be out for another scalp against a player who’s gotten the better of him twice already.

He’s had a good year, reaching two challenger finals, one of which he won, and he also recently reached his second career ATP Tour final in the Austrian Open Kitzbühel; but a seemingly close final against Miomir Kecmanović somehow ended in a straight-sets loss, preventing him from winning his first-ever ATP title.

That run, however, saw him achieve his career-best ATP ranking, position 97, just four spots from his current ranking of position 101.

That very run should act as inspiration as he looks to try and maneuver a way past Ruud, as it already did in his marvelous first-round display that saw him totally dominate Salvatore Caruso.

With a powerful serve as one of his strengths, and a preference for clay courts which has seen him notch a career record of 127 wins against 56 losses, he’ll be hoping that both of those strengths are evident against the young Norwegian. In fact, his 14-5 record on clay this year is almost similar to Ruud’s, which should give him the confidence to go toe to toe with him.

If he were coming up against any other player, that record might have tilted in his favor; but Ruud has a fiery desire to win this tournament that will eclipse all of Hanfmann’s efforts.

Ruud v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Casper Ruud will want to state his intent for the title in his first match. He should be able to match Hanfmann’s dominant serves and find a way of controlling the match early on. Therefore, there is total confidence in him winning the match, and if he does find a way of controlling it early on, he’ll not only win but do so in straight sets.

Tip: Ruud to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
