Laslo Djere v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players which came in 2015 on the Challenger circuit. Vesely had won that one, a final at the Prostejov Challenger, in straight sets to lift the trophy.

Djere Shock for Lajovic

While fellow Serb and second seeded Dusan Lajovic was the favourite going into his match against Djere in the second round, we had a strong inkling things might not be as straightforward as that. That said, did we think Djere would carve out a straight-set win over Lajovic? No!

That’s how it turned out in the end, with Djere proving to be too strong for an opponent ranked 50 places above him. The Serb won 6-4, 7-5 following on from his straight-set win over Sumit Nagal in the first round.

It turned out to be an interesting match but one in which Djere always held the upper hand. But for his ability to close out after consolidating on a break, things might have looked even easier for him.

In the first set, Djere got a break in the third game of the match, only to be broken back in the sixth. This was followed by a break to love in the ninth game before Djere served out the set. The second set followed suit with Djere and Lajovic exchanging four breaks of serve to take them to 5-5.

The next game saw Djere muff up four break-points before converting on the fifth and then serving it out to make it to the last eight.

Vesely Upsets Sonego

Up against the world number 42 and favourite, Lorenzo Sonego, Vesely was 6/5 to clinch the match and that’s what he did. Sonego is no mug as was on display at the French Open a few days ago.

There, the Italian had made it as far as the fourth round before going down to the eventual semifinalist Diego Schwartzman. Which is why, Vesely would be super-chuffed to have gotten past him after his first round, straight-set victory over Kamil Majchrzak.

Vesely had earlier made it to the second round at the French Open, and qualified through to the main draw of the Hamburg Open where he won a match.

Interestingly, for someone who has such a strong record on clay and not so much on hard court surfaces, both of his ATP titles have come on the latter. The second of those two was won earlier this year in Pune.

Djere v Vesely Prediction and Tip

Djere is 8/11 to win this one and we would be backing him to continue with the kind of form he has shown so far in this tournament.

Tip: Djere to win: 8/11 (bet365)
