Lorenzo Musetti v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

Interestingly, their only previous meeting also came in 2020, as recently as in August in the Todi Challenger. Hanfmann had won that match, coming back from being a set down to clinch it 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Musetti Ruling the Clay Courts

He is just 18 years old but has already shown what he is capable of in the second part of this season. Especially on clay.

Having begun the season ranked 364th in the world, Musetti’s rise to the top has been exemplary and it looks like he is a couple of good results away from breaking into the top 100.

Currently 143rd in the world, the Italian has already gained nine places by making it to the quarterfinal here and another victory will take him to within a sniff of that elusive top 100 mark. After getting stretched a little by Pablo Cuevas in the first round, Musetti looked to be in his elements when he cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win against Andrea Pellegrino in the second.

While Musetti was an odds on favourite to make it through, the maturity he showed in dismantling his opponent looked way beyond his age.

Earlier in September, Musetti had won the first Challenger title of the season, when he claimed the Forli Challenger in Italy, but his biggest result had come just before that in Rome. Needing to qualify to make the main draw of that tournament, Musetti then defeated Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka to make the third round.

With that kind of form under his belt on clay, Musetti has the confidence and momentum going into this one against a player ranked around 40 places ahead of him.

Hanfmann Aiming for Another Deep Run after Kitzbuhel

The German world number 101, Hanfmann is bit of a late bloomer, showing some brilliant form over the last few months. While some of it might not have counted towards any rankings points – it came at a few local exhibition competitions in Germany – it does look like it has given Hanfmann a much-needed boost.

Since returning from the pandemic break, Hanfmann first defeated Musetti and Marco Cecchinato on his way to winning the Todi Challenger and then upped the ante with the performance of his lifetime at Kitzbuhel.

Needing to qualify for the tournament, Hanfmann then went on a rampage as he defeated Alexander Bublik, Dusan Lajovic, Maximilian Marterer and Laslo Djere in four straight rounds to make it to the final there. And while Miomir Kecmanovic claimed the title by beating Hanfmann in straight sets, the German had announced himself as a force to reckon.

While Hanfmann didn’t quite set the courts alight at Hamburg and Parma, he defeated Salvaore Caruso in the first round at the Sardinia Open to set up a meeting with Casper Ruud. Now, Ruud has been one of the players of the season on clay but against Hanfmann he capitulated rather stunningly, with the latter allowing the Norwegian just three games in the entire match.

What this does is sets up a brilliant quarterfinal fixture between two unlikely but excellent clay-courters.

Musetti v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

This one is a tough call and the odds reflect that. Musetti starts off a favourite at 7/10 while Hanfmann is 11/10 but the manner in which the latter took out Ruud should give him a huge edge here. Tipping the German to carve out a win here.

Tip: Hanfmann to win: 11/10
