Shapovalov Looks to Keep London Hopes Alive

Denis Shapovalov will probably need a minor miracle now to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals. After reaching the semifinals in St. Petersburg, the power-hitting Canadian suffered a damaging second round defeat to Gilles Simon in Cologne 2.

Shapovalov hit a whopping 13 double faults in the contest and failed to find his range in a display littered with errors and his inability to hold serve at pressure moments.

The likes of Diego Schwartzman, Matteo Berrettini and Gael Monfils are ahead of him in the ascendancy with the Argentine in prime position to secure the final berth for London.

Stranger things have happened and it is not out of question for 21-year-old to do the unthinkable and claim back-to-back titles. Towards the end of 2019, Shapovalov nearly achieved that feat when he won his first ATP title on the indoor hard court of Stockholm and finished runner-up at the Paris Masters.

Has the Canadian left it too late or could he have one last shot up his sleeve as he faces Jurij Rodionov in the first round of Vienna?

Rodionov’s Season of Promise Earns Him A Wildcard

Recent Grand Slam breakthrough at the 2020 French Open convinced tournament organizers to hand Jurij Rodionov a wildcard entry for the Erste Bank Open in one of the most loaded star-studded line up for an ATP 500 event.

Before the coronavirus pandemic brought the tennis season to a halt in early March, Rodionov was sprinting towards qualification for the Next Gen ATP Finals. The young Austrian, ranked outside the top-300 at the start of the year, was a ruthless force in February, winning 15 out of 17 matches on the Challenger circuit.

That sensational run of victories brought 21-year-old two Challenger titles, in Dallas and Morelos, and his ranking naturally shot up to inside the top-200.

Currently sitting at no.151 in the world rankings, this has proved to his best season bar none, reaching the aforementioned Grand Slam main draw for the first time at the French Open. Consequently, he also registered his first win when he beat Jeremy Chardy in a five-set thriller.

Shapovalov v Rodionov Prediction and Tip

This is a battle between two left handers who can hit big. While Shapovalov is in general the more experienced of the pair, Rodionov is as unpredictable as they come. With a bludgeoning forehand and an affinity for the trick shots, this feels like the perfect stage for Rodionov to spring a huge upset. We expect the Canadian to have the edge, but this should be highly competitive to what the odds suggest.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
