Hubert Hurkacz v v Attila Balazs Head to Head

The head-to-head between the pair is tied at 1-1. Hurkacz won their first meeting at the Koblenz Challenger in 2018, but it was the veteran Hungarian who claimed an upset in their last outing on the clay courts of Budapest last year.

Hurkacz Recovers From Food Poisoning

Ranked at world no.31, Hubert Hurkacz is easily Poland’s finest male player right now. However, he has had an almighty tussle in stringing wins together since the tour’s restart.

In the midst of this dwindling run of bad form, Hurkacz secured his best win at the Rome Masters when he beat Andrey Rublev. And last week’s quarterfinal showing in Cologne was just the second tournament since tennis return that he managed to secure back-to-back wins.

For a player replete with talent and stature, Hurkacz seems to be fighting the inconsistency demons which have seen his game go off the boil at crucial times in matches. Take for instance his opening round win in Cologne against Marc Polmans in which he made a splendid start to win the first set, but had to rally from a 1-5 deficit midway through the second.

Hurkacz was eventually beaten by Roberto Bautista Agut in the last eight, but unfortunately could not compete in Cologne double header for its second event, withdrawing altogether after suffering a bout of food poisoning. He has since recovered and is raring to go in Vienna where he will attempt to do better than last year’s first round defeat.

Balazs Takes Out Seasoned Doubles Players in Qualifiers

It has been an amusing path into the main draw of Vienna for Attila Balazs. The Hungarian veteran in his second coming as a tennis player, navigated past two seasoned doubles players to set up a meeting with Hurkacz.

First up, he beat 36-year-old Rajeev Ram who last played a singles match in February 2018. Then he knocked out Bruno Soares in the second round of qualifying (a player whose last full singles season came in 2005, and last official singles match came in 2015).

Balazs will certainly feel the tension and change in intensity against world no.31 Hurkacz. He is playing in his first tournament since the French Open, and his first on hard court since losing in the first round of the US Open to Mikhail Kukushkin.

The 32-year-old is 6-5 for the season at tour level, but he does boast a title win at Challenger level in Bangkok at the very start of the year.

Hurkacz v Balazs Prediction and Tip

At 1/9, Hurkacz is the overwhelming favorite to win here and rightly so. But he has dropped a level or two in the past few weeks which makes Balazs (currently 6/1) at astronomical odds, a very smart pick for this one.

Tip: Balazs to win a set – Yes: 9/4 (bet365)
